Holmes’ Heroes

Larry Sowers is taking charge of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) coordination effort for Holmes Electric at the Nintendo headquarters job site. “So what does that mean,” you ask? Well, how about “getting all the pipes in the right place even before there’s a building to look at…?”

Larry is currently working with Turner Construction and the other trades in modeling the building information (BIM). He creates hand-drawn sketches and, with the expert help of Joel Hewitt, then transforms them to computer generated three-dimensional images. BIM is just one of the emerging productivity tools used by Holmes Electric to help differentiate our organization. But let’s not forget that the process is useless without the great minds of guys like Larry who can envision how it’s all supposed to go together.

The large scope of underground conduit work is almost complete. Larry worked through a number of layout renditions before arriving at the final design. With the assistance of the gear supplier, the UPS supplier, and Turner Construction, the complex conduit system for the UPS room is now correctly poured in the concrete slab. It sounds easy, but synchronizing the working clearance for radius bends, maintaining serviceability, and planning for the prospect of future system requirements is no small task.

The project is now up to the first elevated deck of the office building and Larry is pulling together all of the systems that need to go into the first floor and ceiling of the parking and utility areas. Imagine 90,000 square feet of concrete slab with conduits and raceway running every which way and only one chance to get it right. Lucky for us that Larry’s history and experience point to accuracy and success the first time, every time. Holmes and Nintendo can rest easy knowing that we are in the good and capable hands of one of our finest and most dedicated employees.
